What makes a product good and what makes a product bad? If you are a manufacturer, you want to produce only good products. Bad products won't take you anywhere in the long run. You might be able to sell a few products but once your customers find out that what you are selling bad products, they won't come back for more. And we all know that business are built on repeat customers and free word of mouth advertising.

If you are a salesperson, you will have to be careful not to promote defective products if you want to last in this business. Referrals are often gained from satisfied customers and it will be quite difficult to get referrals from customers who bought bad products from you.

How do you define a bad product? Sometimes a good product may be viewed as a bad product and vice versa. It is the expectations of customers that the product has to meet that defines whether a product is good or bad.

Take for example a simple mouse trap. The theory was that if you build the best mousetrap, you should be able to sell the product without any difficulty. So an excellent high-tech mouse trap was created and was sent to the market to test the theory. The surprising thing is the old style wooden mousetrap still outsells the new high-tech mousetrap by a significant lead.

By using surveys, the researchers found out that housewives, who normally took care of that during those times, preferred the wooden mousetrap because it was disposable. They throw the dead mouse together with the wooden mouse trap because it's more convenient for them that way.

We can say that the new high-tech mouse trap is a good product but it doesn't meet the end user's need. They won't throw away such a good product together with the dead mouse.
