Internet service providers issue standard modems or routers with the service plan. Depending on your plan, you may get a modem or a router. There are various plans for different needs. If you only plan to use just one computer, there's a plan for that and separate plans for multiple computers. It is now common for most households to have more than one computer.

Now multi-computer plans from the internet service providers are understandably more expensive. But what most people don't know is that they use their one-computer only plan to connect multiple computers. The secret is using ethernet bridge to connect a router to the modem so you can use multiple computers.

This is how it works, for single computer plans, you will be issued a modem that can connect just one computer. What do you do to be able to use multiple computers? Well you need to use a router. You connect the router to the modem supplied by the internet provider and your computers will then connect to the router. You can choose wireless or wired routers. There are models that support both.

The thing is the modem that internet service providers issue are sometime really routers programmed to accommodate just one computer. That's you why you have to set it to ethernet bridge first. Otherwise it will continue to generate IP address and the router you bought will not be able to distribute the internet connection.

The router issues IP addresses to individual computers using DHCP or dynamic hosting control protocol. You have to disable this first in the first router by doing an ethernet bridge.

The problem with the dsl bridge set-up is that there are just so many break points. Your computers will connect to a router that connects to the modem that connects to the telephone jack.
