The Sad Plight of People With Disabilities

There are many types of disabilities. Some are physical, such as the inability to see, hear, talk, or move at a normal level. Mental disabilities include retardation, bipolarism, attention deficiency, and insanity in any level.

People with disabilities often have difficulties to adjust to normal activities, and to live independently. Unfortunately, society has not been always kind to these people, and has treated them as social outcasts. Although many people with disabilities would have been able to function in a workplace setting, they are often discriminated against or even barred from such gainful employment.

Currently, many governments have adapted laws that require employers and establishments to provide employment opportunities and other services to help these people get back into the mainstream of society.

History of the Disability Law Service

It is with the consciousness about the plight of the disabled that the Disability Law Service came into being. This is a professional organization that advocates the rights of people with disabilities and provides various services to help them with labor and social issues. Incidentally, it is run by disabled people as well.

The Disability Law Service had its beginnings back in the eighties as a purely volunteer group located within a community center in London. The group slowly grew in popularity and by the nineties, it had a director and several disability lawyers.

The group is funded by donations from individuals as well as the legal sector. It works closely with London councils and has service agreements with various law firms.

Services Provided by the Disability Law Service

The services that the group provides is centered on the welfare of the disabled. The group educates its clients on their rights as citizens and as employees. The disabled can call the group and receive free advice on a variety of problems or issues.

On a grander scale, people with disabilities who have encountered discrimination or other problems can also look to the group's legal counsel to file lawsuits on their behalf. The group also refers clients to the law firms that it has service agreements with.

Disability Law Service also facilitates outreach programs to better educate the disabled about social and legal rights under the disability laws. It also sponsors various social activities, such as the forthcoming marathon in 2009.

The group welcomes donations and volunteer services from individuals or organizations.
