The assured tenancy agreement simply pertains to the agreement for the rights and responsibilities of both the landlord and the tenant. If you are a tenant or a landlord, then you should be aware of this agreement. All landlords should have this agreement with their tenants as it tackles some issues like the amount you should pay for the rent and your possible length of stay. You should think of this like a written contract containing your rights.

One of the common problems that arises between a tenant and a landlord is that the landlord is evicting the tenant. If you have experienced this, you could fight for your right, assuming that you are a regulated tenant. Regulated tenancy is one of the types of assured tenancy agreement in which you have rented the place before January 15, 1989. Therefore, your landlord could not evict you unless the court grants him/her a possession order.

On the other hand, if you are not living with your landlord within the same building, then you have an assured or short hold tenancy. The other requirements for you to be an assured or short hold tenant are you have rented the flat or the home after January 15, 1989 and that your house is separated from the house of your landlord.

Checking first the type of assured tenancy agreement that applies to you could help you when you and your landowner have a dispute. If your landlord still wants to evict you without a possession order, you can have a 'compromise agreement' in which you can ask help from the authorities about your landlord's behavior. On the other hand, if you are having trouble with your landlord because you have debts, then you could try the individual voluntary agreement in which your creditor could lend you some money that you could pay for 5 years. If after 5 years you have paid a certain percentage of your debt, your remaining debts could be now written off.

Whatever may happen between you and your landlord, just remember to start your relationship with your landlord healthy.
