Boat Hoist Helps In Boat Maintenance

A boat hoist is one of the most important items of boating safety equipment you will find in marinas and other places where you dock boats. Essentially, the boat hoist is a mechanical device which enables you to lift or lower the boat.

Due to the lifting capability of the boat hoist, you can lift the craft out of the water when you are not using it. This makes it easier for you to carry out normal maintenance tasks. You can wash the boat with fresh water after using it in a marine environment or brackish water areas like the bayous. This helps minimize the growth of algae or barnacles on the bottom -- which is undesirable because they create a drag on your boat.

Boat hoists may use drums with lengths of rope wrapped around them to act as lifting medium. Chains or wire rope may replace rope in some boat hoist setups.

A boat hoist will also need a power source to provide the energy for lifting the boat’s weight. Power can come from an electric motor, a pneumatic air motor, or even a manually operated device such as a winch or a large lift-wheel with a hand crank. In bigger dock facilities, a more technologically advanced hydraulic boat lift may be installed.

Manually operated boat hoists obviously are the cheapest boat lifting setups you can get. The downside is that its lifting capacity may be limited; it may also be inconvenient to operate if you spend a day out boating and return to your dock a bit too tired. You may want to upgrade your manual boat hoist by adding a small electric motor which you can easily buy from a boat dock supplies store. Remember that electrically operated boat hoists should be fitted with a ground-fault circuit interrupter to minimize the risk of electrocution.
