Pantages Theatre Hollywood is one of the most famous and glamorous landmarks in the world's movie capital. It was part of a huge empire of 22 movie theaters known as the Pantages theatre circuit. The Pantages Theatre Hollywood had the distinction of being the last to be built and the largest among the Pantages theaters.

Pantages Theatre Hollywood has a distinguished history. It played host to the movie premieres of many famous films. The Pantages ceased to be a movie theater in 1977. From that time, it has served as the venue for large-scale stage productions. For the long-running musical Wicked Pantages has served as the most acclaimed site.

For a solid decade until 1959, the Pantages provided the venue for the movie world’s most sought after awards, including the first time the awards ceremonies were covered by television in 1953. The Pantages Theatre Hollywood also hosted the music industry’s top awards ceremonies from inception until 1977.

Pantages Theatre Hollywood is considered the grande dame of 1930s structures that utilized the architectural concepts of art deco design. Its most impressive feature is the gigantic lobby whose size and beautifully detailed décor simply overwhelms the most discriminating theater patron. The glorious lobby has inspired the equally beautiful lobby created for the luxurious Pantages Suites Hotel also known as Pantages Hotel Toronto.

More recently, the demand for prime office space has inspired renovation plans for Pantages Theatre Hollywood. The theater was originally designed for 12 floors but the economic difficulties of the 1930s caused construction to be stopped after two floors were completed. The present owners now plan to add the long-overdue ten floors while remaining faithful to the art deco architecture that distinguishes it from modern buildings nearby.

If plans go smoothly, construction will be completed by 2012. This will solidify Pantages Theatre Hollywood's premier position in the tinsel town it helped create.
