Gardner Massachusetts is a small city, with a population of about 20,000 people and a land area of twenty-two square miles. A short drive of nearly sixty miles north-west from the state capital will take you to the city.

Despite its size, Gardner Massachusetts has a long history that dates back to the year 1764 when it was first settled. Two decades after the first settlers occupied the area, the state legislature granted the residents' petition for incorporation into a town. Gardner Massachusetts officially became a town in the middle of June, 1785 with a starting population of about 375 people. In 1923, it was incorporated as a city.

Many hills dot the city terrain. In its early days, the town had lush growths of timber, primarily beech, ash, maple, and birch with a sprinkling of elm. This proved propitious. From 1805, Gardner Massachusetts developed into an important center for lumber and furniture manufacturing. A century after this, the town was producing chairs in the order of 4 million units annually. This gave rise to its nickname of Chair City, which remains to this day, and the town was recognized as New England's Furniture Capital.

Visitors to Gardner Massachusetts will find a beautiful pond situated at the city's center, nearly one mile long and a half mile wide. It is a haven for the lover of nature and the smooth waters give a suitable environment for quiet relaxation. The early settlers named the pond Crystal Lake.

The pond indicates that Gardner Massachusetts is well-watered. In addition, there is a river running through its south-west part, plus several brooks and streams. Ample water supply supports the beautiful gardens the city’s residents keep. It is not surprising to find gardener supply stores flourishing in the city. The scenic lake, the gardens, and the giant chair in the park are the enduring images of Gardner Massachusetts.
