Cerbral palsey or cerebral palsey is a condition that affects a part of the brain that controls muscle movements. Cerbral palsey is normally detected in early childhood, and the symptoms that appear differ with each patient. Common cerebral palsey symptoms include difficulty in controlling urine and bowel movements, learning disabilities and difficulty in breathing.
Cerbral palsey is caused by the improper development of a patient’s brain. Babies who do not receive adequate oxygen while in the mother’s womb also run the risk of contracting cerebral palsey. Doctors normally use CT scans or magnetic resonance imaging to diagnose cerbral palsey. Some physical tests may also be performed to evaluate a child’s reflexes and motor skills.
There are several types of cerebral palsy that exist, and other symptoms may also be evident aside from those described earlier:
Patients who suffer from spastic cerebral palsey have trouble moving certain body parts. This can include an arm and a leg on one side of the patient’s body, the movement of both legs or the movement of the neck and/or trunk as well as both legs and arms.
Athetoid cerebral palsey is diagnosed when a patient is found to have trouble speaking, has problems swallowing and holding things. Self feeding can also be a problem, and involuntary drooling is also evident. Sometimes patients suffering from athetoid cerebral palsey also have uncontrollable facial expressions, cannot walk or stand in a proper manner. There is also very slow movement of the limbs.
Ataxic cerebral palsy is experienced when patients have trouble with balancing one’s body. Some patients also experience shaky movements or tremors within the body.
It is also quite possible for a patient to contract mixed cerebral palsey, which is a combination of different forms of cerebral palsey.
The cure for cerebral palsey has yet to be discovered. There are various forms of therapy that can be utilized to help with a patient’s motor skills and improve a patient’s daily living conditions. Some doctors will prescribe certain medications to limit the uncontrollable movements of a patient. There are also medications that control seizures. Individuals who have trouble in speaking are provided voice synthesizers, so other parties can carry on normal conversations with the patient.
