Real time PCR protocol, also known, as real time polymerase chain reaction is an in-vitro technique performed in order to reproduce DNA without using live microorganisms. Real time PCR can be performed on the DNA strands and can be used to manipulate different genetic procedures.

In order to perform real time PCR protocol one needs to use a test tube, a heat source and several reagents composed of a DNA fragment that is to be reproduced (it can be a non-coding sequence of a gene, or part of a gene), some artificial DNA strands, a chemical used to reproduce DNA and a taq polymerase, which is responsible for causing the DNA to multiply.

Real time PCR protocol requires a real time PCR machine in order for it to work. A thermal cycler contained in the real time PCR machine is used to contain the test tubes. It is the job of a real time PCR machine to heat and cool the test tubes, so to create the chemical reaction, and cause the reproduction of DNA strands.

Real time PCR protocol can be sued for genetic fingerprinting. Genetic fingerprinting is the process of obtaining a sample of a person’s DNA, and matching it with the sample of DNA strand obtained in a crime scene. A DNA strand can be obtained from a person’s saliva, blood, hair or semen.

Real time PCR can also be used to verify the genetic relationships between parent and child.

You can detect if a hereditary or viral disease is present in a person through real time PCR. The DNA analysis in this method can be useful in diagnosing diseases early enough so that earlier treatment can be made. In terms of a viral infection, an analysis can only be made after a person has been infected.

Gene cloning can take place with the help of real time PCR protocol, as well as to assist in mutation experiments.

With the help of real time PCR protocol, scientists can analyze DNA, which are discovered to be thousands of years old.
